could this be a scam?

It was all smiles, cheers and allulation as the long awaited multi-billion development project expected to spur growth in Homa Bay County was launched on Wednesday in Karachuonyo Constituency. The project dubbed Agricity, which is expected to create 20,000 jobs will be implemented at a cost of over sh550 billion under a joint venture between an Oman-based investment company, Good Earth Power and the County Government of Homa Bay. At a colourful launch attended by the investors and senior government officials at Riwa in Karachuonyo Constituency, Homa Bay governor Cyprian Awiti, said the project, which is the first of its kind in the entire country, will transform the lives of the area residents as well as the entire nation. Awiti refuted claims that the project was a conduit for corruption and called on all to support it saying it will enable Homa Bay County become self- reliant in food production. The launch was also attended by Senator Otieno Kajwang’, Homa Bay County Commissioner Samwel Otieno, area Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata and Rangwe MP George Oner. Kajwang’ appealed to the local people to keep politics out of the project, saying they stood to benefit from it. “I have never seen a project worth sh500 billion but I believe it will create development which will enhance relations between the East African countries through trade,” Kajwang’ added. The Good Earth Power Head of Business Development, Martin Gillard said the project will result in the construction of 100,000 low cost houses, roads, power generation, and provision of purified water, which is a major challenge in the county. “Our organization is committed to transforming lives of Homa Bay residents to ensure they live an enjoyable life. What we are doing today is a foundation of future development projects in this county,” Gillard said. Commissioner Otieno said his office is going to ensure security in the area so as to enable implementation of the project to take place successfully.

New era of thoughts

By
Winnie Mireri,
Interim secretary, Homabay County Youth Alliance.

We the youths of Homabay County have come to realize that we have so many resources, so much potential and very intellectuals that can make the county a success and be an example to the rest of the country. These resources have been of fundamental importance though we find that in the past years they have been mismanaged or neglected as if they never existed hence affecting climate change.
Homabay county is a very beautiful county consisting of different attractive sceneries such as the beautiful Lake Victoria, Lake Simbi, Ruma National Park including so many hills that attract tourists. We also have beautiful birds such as flamingoes and pelicans. We are also privileged to be participating in agribusiness which has been a source of income.
Because of the shortcomings we have seen in the management of our resources, we have decided that we as the youths are not going to watch our county deteriorate. For this reason, we have decided to create the group known as Homabay County Youth Alliance in order to help us save our county from ‘dying.’
This group was formed on the 4th of October 2013 at a seminar with the Kenya Young Greens at Staridge hotel in Homabay town. We really appreciate the help and support of the leaders of Kenya Young Green such as Ann Bulimu, Lance Orwa, Meshak Koballa and Eston Nyakiya. Our great gratitude goes to the consultant Peter K’ochupe who was of great help to the group throughout the entire training. To our guests, Hon. Dorothy  Atieno Okello, minister for tourism, culture and sports, her colleague and Mr.Kennedy Ongeko, the county Transition Co-ordinator, thank you for coming and we hope you will help us achieve our dream.
Finally, the interim committee would like to thank everyone who proposed for their leadership and we are glad for seeing the potential in us. We would like to encourage each and every individual who took part in this to work hard for its success. Let us empower the youth because we are the light of our generation and may we also encourage others to join us in the campaign for a better Homabay county. May God bless you all. CHEERS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!!!!!!!!
