could this be a scam?
It was all smiles, cheers and allulation as the long awaited multi-billion development project expected to spur growth in Homa Bay County was launched on Wednesday in Karachuonyo Constituency.
The project dubbed Agricity, which is expected to create 20,000 jobs will be implemented at a cost of over sh550 billion under a joint venture between an Oman-based investment company, Good Earth Power and the County Government of Homa Bay.
At a colourful launch attended by the investors and senior government officials at Riwa in Karachuonyo Constituency, Homa Bay governor Cyprian Awiti, said the project, which is the first of its kind in the entire country, will transform the lives of the area residents as well as the entire nation.
Awiti refuted claims that the project was a conduit for corruption and called on all to support it saying it will enable Homa Bay County become self- reliant in food production.
The launch was also attended by Senator Otieno Kajwang’, Homa Bay County Commissioner Samwel Otieno, area Deputy Governor Hamilton Orata and Rangwe MP George Oner.
Kajwang’ appealed to the local people to keep politics out of the project, saying they stood to benefit from it.
“I have never seen a project worth sh500 billion but I believe it will create development which will enhance relations between the East African countries through trade,” Kajwang’ added.
The Good Earth Power Head of Business Development, Martin Gillard said the project will result in the construction of 100,000 low cost houses, roads, power generation, and provision of purified water, which is a major challenge in the county.
“Our organization is committed to transforming lives of Homa Bay residents to ensure they live an enjoyable life. What we are doing today is a foundation of future development projects in this county,” Gillard said.
Commissioner Otieno said his office is going to ensure security in the area so as to enable implementation of the project to take place successfully.
